Name List Workshop – Lesson 1: The basics

In the world of name badges one of the more confusing points often concerns name lists and how best to send them our way. To help answer that question we thought a blog post might be in order.

Our main request is that name lists be sent over via email in MS Word or MS Excel. We often send our formatting instructions to those sending over orders for the first time or at anyone’s request. Badges that only have one line of personalization are easy and quick to format. In Word you can simply list them one after another down the page. In Excel you’d list them all in column A. Be sure to remove any extra spaces at the end of names. The end result should look like this:

Bruce Wayne
Selina Kyle
Edward Nygma
Harleen Quinzel

If you have two or more lines of personalization per badge, it’s a little different. If you are using Word you would type the first line, hit the {tab} key, type the second line and then repeat if you have more lines of personalization on that badge. One you’ve reached the last line for that badge you would hit {enter} to move to the next line down and repeat the process. In Excel you would do the same thing so that all the first lines are in column A, all the second lines are in column B and so on. In this case the result looks like:

names

Excel is the program that we use to save the final version of each name list though we are happy to accept your name lists in Word as well.

Next Tuesday we’ll go over how to combine columns in Excel step by step so that your names that are separated into separate columns can end up in a single column for correct formatting!

Hopefully that helps to make the issue of formatting name lists a little easier and clearer! Let us know in the comments below, on Twitter or Facebook if you have any other questions and we’ll be happy to answer those for you!
